The GreenHAT Digital office will be closed from January 1 – 11, 2013 while I am off on a jungle adventure in Belize.

We’ll be Internet-free and using the time to catch-up on some reading. On the list is Capturing Community: How to Build, Manage, and Market Your Online Community by Michael Silverman and Social Media Is Bullshit by B.J. Mendelson.

I’m not sure which title to read first. Although understanding the bullshit before capturing the community is probably the best bet.

Thanks for a wonderful year, and see you in 2013!

The Toronto-based digital aggregator, producer and distributor was name “Digital Company of the Year” in recognition of it diversified business model.

“We are fully exploiting the linear, we are fully exploiting the interactive, but also we are fully exploiting ancillary markets where we can monetize the properties,” company chairwoman and co-founder Catherine Tait told Playback.

iThentic was launched in 2006 and is backed by eOne Entertainment, Canada’s largest entertainment company, the founders of iThentic LLC (led by Catherine Tait), and Smiley Guy Studios, an award winning animation and new media studio. The company supports an online and mobile video destination site and will be launching the iFestivus digital platform in the near future.

Other upcoming iThentic projects include SOS: Save our Skins and Everyday is like Sunday. Guidestones, an original IP produced by iThentic and Toronto-based 3 o’clock TV and directed by Jay Ferguson, will be heading into its second season in early 2013. The web series, which taps into conspiracy theories and the thriller genre, was created as both an interactive “push” version that lets viewers participate and find clues on the web to unlock the series narrative, and also a linear version for more passive, serialized viewing. A 34-episode on-demand version of the first season launched on Hulu in June.

Secret Location took home two awards at the Digi Awards, Canada’s premier showcase for the digital media industry.

The interactive agency won Best in Cross-Platform – Non-Fiction for D-Day To Victory and Best in Cross-Platform – Kids for In Real Life Interactive.

D-Day to Victory Interactive is an online WWII documentary experience that follows the Allied journey from the D-Day invasion of Normandy to the siege of Berlin. The site is an extension to the six-part TV documentary series, D-Day to Victory, commissioned by History Television Canada and Channel4 in the UK. Both the TV series and website feature poignant interviews with surviving veterans, retelling their experiences of the final assault on Nazi-occupied Europe. Along with the veterans’ stories, users can browse through biographies and artifacts, and share with others online through Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.

In Real Life Interactive was first launched as a Flash web game in 2010, and then redesigned and launched on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad for Season 3. The app allowed viewers to shape In Real Life‘s narrative by affecting a webisode selection process. Points kids scored playing Race to the Finish were put towards bringing their favourite on-air “challengers” back, while also playing for a chance to participate themselves. The two challengers with the most fan-generated points and two top fans on the leader board competed in teams of two against each other in the webisode. It aired directly after the show’s finale with a simultaneous launch on the website.

Secret Location was also nominated in the Web Series – Fiction category for “What are The Sevens?“, a multi-layered interactive episode that is both a video short, interactive game and a fully immersive mystery. By solving puzzles and dialing a phone number, users are taken deeper into the narrative and given a chance to solve a puzzle and reveal an alternative story ending.

Guidestones was the Best in Web Series – Fiction winner at the 2012 Digi Awards. The event took place, last night, at The Carlu in Toronto.

Producers Jay Ferguson (3 o’clock.tv) and Jonas Diamond (iThentic) were on hand to accept the prize from Yummy Mummy, Erica Ehm, who was herself a winner in the Digital Lifestyle & Entertainment category.

This is the most recent in a string of awards for Guidestones.

In June, Guidestones director Jay Ferguson and producer Jonas Diamond traveled to Alberta for the Banff World Media Festival. While there, they participated in the Digital Launch Pad, and won the Rockie Award for Best Webseries – Fiction.

Look for more award possibilities in the near future. The web series has received multiple nominations at the IAWTV Awards, including: Best Directing (Jay Ferguson), Best Cinematography (Jay Ferguson, Robert Barnett), Best Female Performance (Supinder Wraich), Best Editing (Anthony Baird, Thomas Smalley), and Best Supplemental Content. The IAWTV Awards take place January 8th in Las Vegas.

We should also find out soon if the series has been nominated for The Streamys.

Hard to believe its been almost a year since we launched the series.

The Digis Awards are Canada’s premier showcase of the companies, products and people who are making waves in the digital media industry.
