iThentic, Farmhouse Productions and duopoly today announced the beginning of principal photography for Epic Studios, a 13-episode web series produced for Maker Studios. The series stars YouTube celebrity EpicLLOYD of Epic Rap Battles of History. Photography wraps early June for a September release.
Epic Studios is a character-driven comedy about Lloyd Steflan (Lloyd Ahlquist aka EpicLLOYD), an adrift loser and closet rapper who inherits a failing music studio when his estranged heavy metal rock star father dies in a tragic accident.
Returning to Toronto, Canada, Lloyd vows to restore the run-down studio — and its staff — to their former glory. The series takes its cue from Flight of the Conchords, 30 Rock and other comedy series with hip hop music and videos threaded throughout the content.
Lloyd Ahlquist is co-creator of Epic Rap Battles of History, one of the most successful online web series of all time with over 2.9 billion views, 13.3 million subscribers, 11 RIAA-certified gold singles, 10 Streamy Awards, two Webby Awards (for “Best Musical Series” and “Best Individual Performance”), four Webby Award nominations, a PGA nomination, and a YouTube Music Award nomination. Lloyd has also appeared on Key & Peele (Comedy Central), The League (FX) and MANswers (Spike).
Epic Studios is produced for Maker Studios by iThentic, Farmhouse Productions and duopoly in association with the Independent Production Fund (IPF) and the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC).
It was created by Jill Goslicky, Aaron Krebs, and Lloyd Ahlquist; written by Josh Gal (Working The Engels) and Amanda Brooke Perrin (Spun Out); and directed by Rob Stefaniuk (Phil the Alien, Suck, Anxietyville).
Guest stars include Kevin MacDonald (Kids in the Hall) and Adam Rodness (Hemlock Grove).
